From the locked halls of Bordesley Hollow rises Sparky, a name born in cruelty and reclaimed in fire.

Mary was orphaned at birth in 1920, marked early as defiant in a world that demanded silence. She spoke up, questioned authority, and protected others, which was enough to label her dangerous. With no one to defend her, she was sent to the asylum not for illness, but for refusing obedience.

“Sparky” was meant as mockery, a cruel reference to the electricity used to punish defiance. Mary carried it anyway, turning pain into identity and survival into resistance. Years of institutional abuse failed to break her. When the doors finally opened, she did not retreat, she fought.

This design captures Sparky standing steady amid crackling wires and asylum walls, lightning tearing through the dark behind her. Printed on deep black cotton, the artwork honours a woman who reclaimed her name, her voice, and her power.

This isn’t just a t-shirt.
It’s remembrance.
For the institutionalised, the misjudged, and the ones who refused to disappear.
